Sweaty Feet
(Plantar Hyperhidrosis)
Specialist Surgical Treatment by Dr Igor Banzic
Excessive foot sweating can cause discomfort, embarrassment, and daily inconvenience.
Patients often report frequent sock changes, odour concerns, and difficulty with footwear.
Persistent symptoms may lead to:
- Shoe damage
- Skin irritation
- Fungal infections
- Slipping inside shoes
Plantar hyperhidrosis may occur alone or with sweaty hands.
When Hands and Feet Are Both Affected
Hands are usually treated first with ETS.
Approximately 60% of patients notice improvement in foot sweating after ETS alone.
If foot sweating persists or is the primary concern, Lumbar Sympathectomy (LS) may be recommended.
Definitive Surgical Treatment: Lumbar Sympathectomy (LS)
Lumbar sympathectomy is a targeted surgical procedure designed to permanently reduce excessive sweating in the feet.
How the operation works
- Performed under general anaesthesia
- The surgeon carefully interrupts a specific segment of the lumbar sympathetic chain
- By modifying this nerve pathway, sweat production in the feet is effectively switched off
Hospital stay & recovery
- Patients typically remain in hospital for up to 72 hours for pain control
- Regular oral pain relief is usually required for several days after discharge
- Some patients experience a temporary ache in the thigh, which usually settles over a few weeks
Is Surgery Right for You?
If your foot sweating is severe, persistent, or interfering with your daily life — or if conservative treatments have not been effective — surgical treatment may be an appropriate and long-lasting solution.
